Ammolite is an extremely rare organic gemstone, derived from the fossilized remains of the shells of extinct marine organisms called ammonites. The shells are made of aragonite, the same carbonate that makes up mother-of-pearl. When this fossil material is properly cut, it displays flashes of color and an optical effect very similar to that of opals. Since it is a very fragile material, due to the way the shells have stratified and fossilized, it is regularly treated by impregnation with transparent optical resins. These make it more resistant and suitable for cutting into gemstone form.
