Dark, opaque opal cabochon, which when moved under the light shows a diffuse opalescence with flashes of green and blue.
Dark Opal Cabochon. The opalescence is well distributed over the surface of the gem. Most likely this is the opaque hydrophane variety: a type of unstable opal that is regularly treated by impregnation with artificial silica gel. The treatment serves to decrease the porosity of the hydrophane and stabilize it. This gem has been further treated to darken the background color. It is recommended not to let it come into contact with liquids in general, because hydrophane absorbs them and stains. It is also sensitive to changes in humidity, which can cause cracking of the surface
