3.30ct Oval Cabochon Opal
3.30ct Oval Cabochon Opal
Cabochon of clear opal, semi-transparent, which when moved under the light shows a diffuse opalescence with flashes of red, green, blue and yellow and the structure called honeycomb typical of some Ethiopian opals
Clear Opal Cabochon. The opalescence is well distributed over the surface of the gem. Most likely it is the opaque hydrophane variety: a type of unstable opal that is regularly treated by impregnation with artificial silica gel. The treatment serves to decrease the porosity of the hydrophane and stabilize it. It is recommended not to let it come into contact with liquids in general, because hydrophane absorbs them and stains. It is also sensitive to changes in humidity, which can cause the surface to crack.
