6.19ct Oval Cabochon Opal
6.19ct Oval Cabochon Opal
Transparent cabochon that when moved under the light shows a diffuse opalescence in blue and green, with flashes of red.
Clear Opal Cabochon. The opalescence is well distributed over the surface of the gem. It is most likely the hydrophane variety: a type of unstable opal that is regularly treated by impregnation with artificial silica gel. The treatment serves to decrease the porosity of the hydrophane and stabilize it. It is recommended not to let it come into contact with liquids in general, because hydrophane absorbs them and stains. It is also sensitive to changes in humidity, which can cause the surface to crack.
